👁️ Os Acrósticos da Agostina / Agostina's Acrostics

PT: Hoje não te trago os meus poemas musicados nem as paisagens visuais do costume. Hoje trago-te um segredo e abro espaço no meu universo literário para outra voz: conhece a Agostina Leão. A Agostina é um abraço ao meu futuro e uma homenagem à importância de manter a mente desperta através das palavras. Mais velha, mais serena, ela encontrou na arquitetura exata das palavras a sua maior âncora de lucidez.

Enquanto eu quebro regras e espalho poesias pelos sentidos, ela procura a ordem. Para a Agostina, os acrósticos são como as palavras cruzadas ou o sudoku que faz ao fim da tarde: uma ginástica mental obrigatória para manter o cérebro arejado, focado e livre do esquecimento. Ela só comunica assim, na vertical, letra a letra.

A partir deste fim de agosto, a Agostina passará a visitar-nos uma vez por mês. Deixo-te com o seu exercício de estreia.

EN: Today I’m not bringing you my poems set to music or the usual visual scenes. Today I bring you a secret and open up a space in my literary universe for another voice: meet Agostina Leão. Agostina is an embrace of my future and a tribute to the importance of keeping the mind alert through words. Older, serener, she found in the exact architecture of words her greatest anchor of lucidity.

While I break the rules and spread poetry through the senses, she seeks order. For Agostina, acrostics are like the crosswords or sudoku she solves in the late afternoon: a mandatory mental workout to keep the brain sharp, focused, and free from forgetting. She only communicates this way, vertically, letter by letter.

Starting this late August, Agostina will visit us once a month. I leave you with the debut exercise she prepared.

PT: Os dias de agosto convidam à calmaria, mas também ao desassossego da mente. Hoje, convido-te a olhar comigo para lá do horizonte e a questionar o mundo das letras. No passado dia 12 de maio de 2026, o prestigiado jornal britânico The Guardian publicou uma lista interativa que deu que falar: os 100 melhores romances de todos os tempos. Mas quando olhamos para os números com olhos de ver, a contagem revela uma realidade que nos deve fazer parar para pensar. Onde está a paridade?

EN: The days of August invite calmness, but also a restlessness of the mind. Today, I invite you to look beyond the horizon with me and question the world of letters. On May 12, 2026, the prestigious British newspaper The Guardian published an interactive list that sparked much discussion: the 100 best novels of all time. But when we look closely at the numbers, the count reveals a reality that should make us pause and think. Where is the parity?

📊 A Amargura dos Números: Apenas 27% / The Bitterness of Numbers: Only 27%

PT: Esta lista propõe-se a eleger as obras que moldaram a história da literatura, escolhidas sob critérios de impacto cultural, profundidade narrativa e relevância intemporal. No entanto, o resultado final deixa uma margem desconfortável: dos 100 romances eleitos, apenas 27 foram escritos por mulheres.

Estamos a falar de uma percentagem de apenas 27%. Como é possível que, numa viagem secular pela arte de contar histórias, quase três quartos das escolhas continuem a ser masculinas? Além disso, convém sublinhar que esta lista sofre de uma barreira geográfica e cultural clara: ela representa exclusivamente a realidade da língua inglesa. Toda a riqueza da literatura em língua portuguesa, espanhola, francesa ou oriental fica automaticamente invisível sob este funil anglo-saxónico. Não há, por isso, qualquer escritora portuguesa representada.

EN: This list aims to elect the works that shaped the history of literature, chosen under criteria of cultural impact, narrative depth, and timeless relevance. However, the final result leaves an uncomfortable margin: out of the 100 chosen novels, only 27 were written by women.

We are talking about a percentage of only 27%. How is it possible that, in a centuries-old journey through the art of storytelling, nearly three-quarters of the choices remain masculine? Furthermore, it is worth noting that this list suffers from a clear geographical and cultural barrier: it exclusively represents the reality of the English language. All the richness of literature in Portuguese, Spanish, French, or Eastern languages is automatically invisible under this Anglo-Saxon funnel. There is, therefore, no Portuguese female writer represented.

👩‍🎓 As 27 Vozes Resistentes / The 27 Resilient Voices

EN: Even so, the Women who managed to break this barrier are giants. From the pioneering spirit of Aphra Behn in the 17th century, through the gothic strength of Mary Shelley, the surgical irony of Jane Austen, the passion of the Brontë sisters, to the modernist genius of Virginia Woolf, and the contemporary rawness of Margaret Atwood and Toni Morrison. They are 27 lighthouses illuminating the list, proving that female literary quality has always been unquestionable, even when the space to publish or be recognized was kept to a minimum.

⚖️ A Luta pela Paridade no Mundo das Letras / The Fight for Parity in the World of Letters

PT: Este balanço é o reflexo de que, no mundo ocidental, ainda não há paridade no universo das letras — tal como não há em tantos outros quadrantes da nossa sociedade. Ao longo da história, as mulheres continuam a estar aquém no reconhecimento e a ter de trabalhar o dobro, de lutar com mais afinco, para verem a sua voz legitimada no topo do cânone. Escrever, para uma mulher, foi muitas vezes um ato de clandestinidade, de usar pseudónimos masculinos ou de ver a sua escrita menorizada como "literatura doméstica". Esperemos que este cenário possa, efetivamente, vir a mudar. O futuro terá de ser escrito com mais equilíbrio.

EN: This balance reflects that, in the Western world, there is still no parity in the universe of letters — just as there is none in so many other sectors of our society. Throughout history, women continue to fall behind in terms of recognition, having to work twice as hard, to fight with greater fierce, to see their voices legitimized at the top of the canon. Writing, for a woman, was often an act of clandestinity, of using male pseudonyms, or of having her work diminished as "domestic literature." Let us hope that this scenario can, indeed, change. The future will have to be written with more balance.
