Para
comemorar o Dia Internacional do Livro Infantil, que se assinala hoje, 3
de março de 2026 (aniversário do mestre Hans Christian Andersen), dedico o
artigo de hoje a um dos meus primeiros livros: Animais Poéticos.
Porque
se comemora esta data? A 2 de abril celebra-se o nascimento do renomado
escritor dinamarquês Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), o mestre dos
contos infantis (O Patinho Feio, A Pequena Sereia). Desde 1967,
esta data foi adotada pela IBBY (International Board on Books for Young
People) para promover a leitura e chamar a atenção para a importância
fundamental dos livros na formação das crianças em todo o mundo.
A
propósito desta comemoração, trago um poema incluído em Animais Poéticos
que é muito especial para mim. Desta vez, o poema intitula-se “Enquanto o
Gato Dorme”.

To celebrate International
Children's Book Day, which is marked today, March 3, 2026 (the
birthday of the master Hans Christian Andersen), I dedicate today's article to
one of my first books: Poetic Animals.
Why is this date celebrated? April 2nd marks the birth of the renowned
Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), the master of
children's tales (The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid). Since
1967, this date has been adopted by the IBBY (International Board on
Books for Young People) to promote reading and highlight the fundamental
importance of books in children's development worldwide.
On the occasion of this celebration, I bring a poem included in Poetic Animals that is very special to me. This time, the poem is entitled "While the Cat Sleeps".

A Poesia e a Arte de "Animais Poéticos" | The Poetry and Art of “Poetic Animals”
PT: Este poema foi ilustrado por Catarina Guerreiro, uma ilustradora portuguesa que conseguiu registar um momento da minha vida. O poema “Enquanto o gato dorme” foi, na verdade, inspirado por um serão em que estava a criar na companhia das minhas gatas, as minhas companheiras de quase 16 anos! A ilustração capturou a essência desse momento.
EN: This book was illustrated by Catarina Guerreiro,
a Portuguese illustrator who managed to capture a moment from my life. The poem
"While the Cat Sleeps" was, in fact, inspired by an evening
when I was writing in the company of my cats, my companions of almost 16 years!
The
illustration truly captured the essence of that moment.
