PT: Fecha
guardam as emoções e as memórias?
regressar a infância inteira. Neste episódio, fui à procura dos meus cheiros e
trouxe-os comigo, em palavras e em música.
EN: Close your eyes for a second. Think of the smell
of wet earth after the rain, the smoke of the first fireplaces, a roasted
chestnut crackling in newspaper. Where did you just go? I know where I go: I
become a little girl again, with warm hands and a belly full of autumn.
October has gone, and with it Pink
October, a month so dear to me, in which we talked about prevention, health and
the courage with which we face life’s challenges. Now November arrives, with
its beautiful grey and the urge to stay sheltered at home. It is the perfect
season to open the drawers of memory.
Did you know that smell is the only
sense directly connected to the areas of the brain that store emotions and
memories? That is why a scent can bring us back, in an instant, to a place we
haven’t been in thirty years. It is called the “Proust effect”, after the
French writer who tasted a little cake dipped in tea and saw his whole
childhood return. In this episode, I went looking for my own scents and brought
them with me, in words and in music.

Episódio de Beijos Poéticos: “Memórias de Outono” / 10th
Episode of Beijos Poéticos: “Autumn Memories”
PT: Nestes
luas no chão.
Zine.
EN: In these 12 minutes of poetry, I bring you three
gifts. The first is a forgotten voice: Helen Hunt Jackson, an American poet,
friend of Emily Dickinson and a brave advocate for Native peoples, who loved
autumn above all seasons. I read you her most famous poem, “October’s Bright
Blue Weather”, in a Portuguese version I prepared for you. The second is a poem
of mine, “Autumn Fruits”, written here in Mem-Martins, among chestnuts,
pomegranates and pumpkins that shine like moons on the ground.

🌰 Desafio de Outono
/ Autumn Challenge
PT: Nos
EN: Over the next few days, when you catch the smell
of rain or of a roasted chestnut, stop for a second. Breathe deeply. That
moment is poetry too, and it is yours. Then come back here and tell me in the
comments: which scent takes you back to your childhood? I will read every
answer, and some of them may inspire a poem in a future episode.

Guarda as datas: a porta continua aberta.
EN: Some
memories don’t fit into photographs. They live in a scent, a taste, a sea breeze that
kisses our skin. May this episode help you find your own, with the sweetness
and the bitter aftertaste that all longing brings. Next Friday there will be
more poetry here on the blog. On November 20th I’ll open a surprise I’ve been
keeping for years in old notebooks: my Christmas Notebook. And on December 4th
I’ll be back with another Beijos Poéticos, already tasting of Christmas, so we
can leaf through it together. Save the dates: the door is
still open.
Gratidão e Beijos Poéticos! 👄🍂
