PT: Olá, querido leitor!
A
continuar a construir o nosso espaço.

Literary news always gives us reasons
to reflect, celebrate, and continue building our space. With the recent
awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature, the number of distinguished women
has risen to 19 out of a total of 123 laureates since 1901. We are
talking about roughly 15.4% of the laureates — a figure that highlights the
long journey already covered, as well as how much further we must go to achieve
true parity in global literary history.
Although women are still actively
carving out and consolidating their space, it is deeply inspiring to see a
woman win the Nobel Prize in Literature — all the more so when the distinction
touches the realm of poetry and genre-crossing writing, which is one of the
themes I explore most and that fascinates me so deeply.
I hope to see many more women win
this prize in the future. But above all, I also wish for more outstanding
literature to find its rightful place among us. The truth is that the universe
of literary creation is vast, and there is always so much left to learn and
explore in these fields.

and Power
PT: Entre
EN: Among these essential voices, it is impossible not to
look with admiration at paths like that of Anne Carson, the brilliant
Canadian poet, essayist, and translator. The Swedish Academy recognized her for
her groundbreaking work that crosses literary boundaries and engages in a
sublime dialogue with the classical tradition, creating new forms for
contemporary literature.
For those of us who, like me, find in
poetry a lifeline and a sanctuary, reading Anne Carson is a way to rediscover
the plasticity of words, the power of myth, and the elegance of a verse that
cuts and heals at the same time. It is living proof that poetry remains one of
the highest peaks of human thought.

das mulheres na literatura / EN: Beyond
the Numbers: The Place of Women in Literature
PT:
E quantas
escritoras continuam hoje a criar obras extraordinárias sem receber a mesma
atenção?
Enquanto
A
EN: When I look at this list, I can’t help but wonder
how many women’s voices have written, dreamed, questioned, and transformed the
world without ever receiving recognition on this scale. How many works have
remained on the margins, how many female authors have been less widely read or
studied, and how many stories have waited decades to find their readers?
The numbers don’t tell the whole
story of literature, but they help us ask questions. Why, over so many decades,
have so few women been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature? What
opportunities did they have to publish, promote their work, and gain recognition?
And how many women writers continue today to create extraordinary works without
receiving the same attention?
As a woman and an author, this
reflection resonates with me deeply. I know that the value of a poem does not
depend on an award, a favorable review, or a spot on a list. Writing has a life
of its own: it is born from an experience, a restlessness, a memory, or a need
to put into words what sometimes seems impossible to express.
Still, recognition matters. Not
because it determines the writer’s worth, but because it can open doors, spark
readers’ curiosity, and take a work further. Recognizing a female author also
creates an opportunity for more people to discover her.
Therefore, rather than viewing these
nineteen women merely as a number, I would like this list to serve as an
invitation to read. May we seek out their books, get to know their stories, and
make room for other female voices—whether established or yet to be discovered.
Literature becomes richer when
different experiences, sensibilities, and perspectives find a place within its
pages. And perhaps one of the simplest ways to contribute to this is to
continue reading, sharing, and valuing what women write.

E as escritoras portuguesas? / EN: What about Portuguese women writers?
PT:
Neste
anúncio do prémio.
Independentemente
do resultado, considero importante que as escritoras portuguesas sejam lidas,
discutidas e divulgadas além-fronteiras.
EN: In this context, I also followed with interest the
news and speculation surrounding Lídia Jorge, whose name was mentioned among
the possible candidates for the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. *O Observador*,
for example, reported that the Portuguese writer appeared on a betting agency’s
list of predictions, where she ranked seventh.
Although these predictions do not
constitute confirmation by the Swedish Academy, they show that Lídia Jorge’s
name was also part of the public debate leading up to the prize announcement.
Regardless of the outcome, I believe
it is important for Portuguese women writers to be read, discussed, and
promoted beyond national borders. Winning a Nobel Prize is just one possible
form of recognition; it is not the sole measure of a work’s significance.
I therefore remain eager to continue
following Portuguese literature and to discover—or rediscover—the female
authors who enrich our language and our culture.
