EN: Poetry doesn't ask for permission, nor is it meant to soothe: it is a living territory of catharsis, voice, and attitude. I am M.ª Leonor Costa (Nonô) — writer, performer, and creator of Poesias da Nonô. I give body, sound, and presence to spoken word in Portuguese and English, inhabited by heteronyms navigating the visceral, the sacred, and the everyday. Step inside. Read with your body, listen with your skin, and inhabit this space.

Between September 13, 2010, and May 30, 2015, I lived through a transformative phase: I moved to Chaves, in the district of Vila Real, right in the heart of Trás-os-Montes. I went to live with a partner and with him shared a home, a life, and many lessons.

EN: It was there, in cold and serene lands, that the Poesias da Nonô blog was born, on October 2, 2014 — a date I carry with tenderness. I wrote many poems on the route between Chaves and Boticas, inside a bus that took me back and forth. The road, the landscape, and the silence of the journeys became an inspiration. Poetry was my greatest companion on the coldest nights.

EN: Living with someone in another city required courage, adaptation, and a lot of heart. It was a phase of inner and outer discoveries. I learned to love in new ways, to listen to time, and to build a new daily routine, far from what was familiar to me. Today, I cherish that stage. It was there that words, ideas, and a new version of myself blossomed.

📝 Poem: ✨Trás-os-Montes

There are cedars, oaks, and olive trees

Along the way

There are mimosas, pines, and brooms

Budding very softly.

There are green pastures

With animals grazing

Vineyards are also found

And other crops just sown.

There are houses ugly and pretty

And many valleys and hills

There are vestiges of other times

And some streams and springs.

There are days of bitter cold

And others with blazing heat

There are humble and joyful people

And very flavorful meats.

Such is Trás-os-Montes

An inland region

Where the air is pure and fresh

And where one lives only for love.

EN: This poem was born from the landscape, the fertile solitude, the people, and the cold. It was written with my heart in my hands and my soul in my lap.
