EN: Poetry doesn't ask for permission, nor is it meant to soothe: it is a living territory of catharsis, voice, and attitude. I am M.ª Leonor Costa (Nonô) — writer, performer, and creator of Poesias da Nonô. I give body, sound, and presence to spoken word in Portuguese and English, inhabited by heteronyms navigating the visceral, the sacred, and the everyday. Step inside. Read with your body, listen with your skin, and inhabit this space.

Poesias Mundanas / Worldly Poetry - Na velha Europa / In the old Europe

Na velha Europa

Na velha Europa

Há cada vez mais corrupção

Prevalece a lei da ganância

Da inveja e da desmedida ambição.

Continente repleto de história

Gozando de alguma união

Se não me falha a memória

Viveu séculos de guerra e convulsão.

Avizinham-se tempos difíceis

De reorganização mundial

A economia virou religião

E a sua conquista é pouco espiritual.

Que a fome e a crise

Se mantenham à distância

Deste velho continente

Que teve outrora maior importância!

Worldly Poetry
In the old Europe

In the old Europe

There is increased corruption

The law of greed prevails

Of envy and unbridled ambition.

Continent steeped in history

Enjoying of some union

If memory serves me right

It has lived through centuries of war and upheaval.

Challenging times are coming

Of world reorganization

The economy has turned into religion

And its conquest is unspiritual.

May hunger and crisis

Be kept at a distance

From this old continent

Which was once of greater importance!

Handwritten poem: Sitting on my bed, in the color pink bedroom of my house in Chaves, on May 19, 2015, 5:20 a.m.
In Costa, M.ª Leonor, Worldly Poetry. Vol. I
